Fluted pins

What is a fluted pin?

The pin

Pins are cylindrical assembly elements that are essentially used to assemble and position two or more parts together temporarily or permanently.

One pin can be smooth, split, threaded, fluted, rectified etc...

The ingenious design of a pin allows it to be customized with chamfered or curved ends, in order to adapt perfectly to your application project.

The pin is often used in areas where it is necessary to carry out regular assembly and disassembly such as industrial machines, laboratory equipment and the automotive industry.

At Gardette Industries, we have been designing and manufacturing pins for over 100 years.

Thanks to our machining capacity and our know-how, we now offer one of the most complete range of pins:

‍ The fluted pin

A fluted pin, whether ISO 8741 or ISO 8745, is a cylindrical fixing element provided with splines along the length. A fluted pin allows for an inflection and compression movement. Generally, we find 3 splines arranged at an angle of 120°.

Unlike a rectified pin, the fluted pin does not require any specific adjustment tolerance because the elasticity of the splines adapts to the diameter of the hole in which it is inserted. A diameter slightly larger than the nominal diameter ensures a perfect fit and therefore an excellent fit.

The fluted pin can be used in a wide range of applications, for example it is used for:

  • Maintain rotating parts in the automotive industry.
  • Maintain rotating parts in the handling equipment sector.
  • Assembling a driveshaft to a hub in a machine tool.

How does Gardette Industries make its fluted pins?

Various advanced techniques and machines are used for the manufacture of fluted pin.

In this section, we present to you the exclusive manufacturing process that we use within Gardette Industries and the P3G group.

A machine specially designed for the manufacture of our pins is responsible for giving shape to each piece. It all starts with an iron rod, using the material that will best suit your needs in order to produce your stainless steel fluted pins, brass, steel, aluminum, etc.

Once the raw material is introduced into the machine, whether in the form of a bar or a stretched bar, the real process of manufacturing the pin begins.

The machine cuts the bar with precision down to the micron. Each pin is carefully cut to fit your specific project perfectly.

After this crucial step, each piece is meticulously cleaned and oiled. This step is essential because it facilitates friction between the part and the machine, ensuring smooth and smooth operation. Lubrication also helps to extend the life of each pin, thus ensuring its long-term strength and reliability.

As for fluted pins, they are made using a specially designed machine called a “spline machine”.

  • The pins are positioned in the splining station
  • The machine takes the pin
  • The place in the center of the machine
  • Then tools precisely deform the pin to create splines, generally by cold deformation.

There are two types of tools for making a fluted pin:

  • Nails: used in so-called “striking” fluting machines. The pin stays fixed when splining, and the length of the spline depends on the width of the tool.

  • Rollers: used in fluting machines called “presses”. The pin may be fixed or in motion during splining, and the length of the spline is variable.

We manufacture a wide range of pins, each with its own characteristics:

How do I choose the right fluted pin?
